What shapes a kitchen renovation quote?

Separate a finish refresh from a layout change, compare the same scope and prepare useful questions before requesting a kitchen quote.

Start with what stays

A kitchen refresh and a change to the room’s layout are different enquiries. Before choosing colours, list the cabinets, appliances, flooring and fixtures you would like to retain. Then list the problems: too little storage, an awkward walkway, worn surfaces or a workspace that does not suit how you cook.

For example, replacing a backsplash while keeping the cabinets asks a different question from moving the sink and rebuilding the island. Describe the intended change rather than asking for a single price per kitchen. The existing room and the agreed work determine the quote.

Make the scope comparable

Two prices are difficult to compare if one includes preparation, removal and finishing while the other covers installation alone. Ask each business to explain the same list of work. Identify owner-supplied products, items to be assessed and decisions that still need to be made.

  • Cabinet repairs, replacement or new storage
  • Countertops, backsplash and flooring, including preparation
  • Appliance dimensions and any proposed layout changes
  • Fixtures, lighting and specialist work to be assessed
  • Removal, access, protection and finishing included in the scope

Choose priorities before every product

Bring a few reference images and explain what you like about them: the storage, light, material or arrangement. A reference is a starting point, not a promise that every product or feature will suit your space. Share your budget range and separate essential changes from optional details.

If you have selected appliances or fixtures, keep their dimensions and product details together. If you have not selected them yet, say so. Discuss how outstanding decisions and product availability affect the proposed work and schedule.

Prepare for the first conversation

Take a wide photograph and a few detail views of the areas you want changed. Approximate measurements can help explain the room, but an initial photo enquiry cannot reveal hidden conditions. Ask what needs a site visit or further assessment before pricing is finalized.
